The League of United Latin American Citizens and LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Florida had previously issued travel advisories; the civil rights organisation is the most recent to do so.

According to NAACP President & CEO Derrick Johnson, “Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, the state of Florida has become hostile to Black Americans and in direct conflict with the democratic ideals upon which our union was founded.” He ought to be aware that democracy will triumph because its supporters are willing to stand up and fight for it. We won’t give up and call on our allies to join us in the struggle for the very soul of our country.

To get a response about the travel advice, CBS News contacted DeSantis’ office. In the upcoming days, DeSantis is anticipated to begin his presidential campaign.

The introduction of an Advanced Placement course for high school students that emphasises African American studies was thwarted by the DeSantis administration in January. travel advisory to Florida

According to the NAACP travel advisory, “Florida is openly hostile towards African Americans, people of colour, and LGBTQ+ individuals.” Please be aware that Florida values and marginalises the contributions of African Americans and other communities of colour as well as the struggles they face before visiting.

“Let me be clear – failing to teach an accurate representation of the horrors and inequalities that Black Americans have faced and continue to face is a disservice to students and a dereliction of duty to all,” stated Derrick Johnson, president and chief executive officer of the NAACP. “Under Governor Desantis’ direction, Florida has turned hostile towards Black Americans and has strayed far from the democratic principles upon which our union was established. He ought to be aware that democracy will triumph because its supporters are willing to stand up and fight for it. We won’t give up and call on our allies to join us in the struggle for the very soul of our country.

The NAACP’s Florida State Conference initially suggested the travel advice to the Board of Directors. The Governor and his legislative body’s relentless attacks on fundamental freedoms have prompted the NAACP to collectively consider this advisory.

“Once more, state leaders motivated by hatred have chosen to prioritise politics over people. In order to appeal to a perilous, extremist minority, Governor Ron DeSantis and the state of Florida have openly waged war against diversity and inclusion principles and rejected our shared identities, according to Leon Russell, chair of the NAACP Board of Directors. “We won’t consent to have our rights and history taken advantage of for the sake of political showboating. The NAACP proudly defends Black Americans in Florida from nefarious attacks. I enjoin my fellow Floridians to take up arms in this struggle to defend our democracy and selves. travel to Florida

The NAACP, in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers’ Reading, Opens the World programme, distributed 10,000 books to 25 primarily Black communities throughout the state in response to Gov. DeSantis’ alleged leadership in pushing the state to deny students access to the AP African American studies course in March. The majority of the donated books were titles that were forbidden by the state’s increasingly onerous laws. To ensure that everyone has access to representative literature, the NAACP continues to encourage neighbourhood branches and youth councils to establish community libraries.

Florida residents are urged by the NAACP to participate in this campaign to stop the governor and state legislature’s regressive policies. For more details and updates, interested citizens and supporters can visit www.naacp.org.

In 2017, the NAACP previously issued a travel warning to individuals considering visiting Missouri.

Florida has a sizable tourism industry. According to travel company Visit Florida, the state saw 137.6 million visitors in 2022. In 2021, tourists supported more than 1.7 million jobs and gave the state’s economy a $101.9 billion boost.

One of the top tourist attractions, Disney, has been at odds with Governor DeSantis for some time. Disney recently abandoned a $1 billion project to construct a campus in Florida. Disney’s criticism of the state’s “Don’t Say Gay” law sparked the dispute.

Equality After DeSantis made the “Don’t Say Gay” bill law, Florida released its warning.

The group claimed at the time that “that law, along with other proposals under consideration, has turned the state’s classrooms into political battlegrounds and is telegraphing to LGBTQ families and students that they are not welcome in Florida.”

The League of United Latin American Citizens’ advisory referred to stringent immigration laws in Florida. The new immigration laws, according to organisation president Domingo Garcia, are “hostile and dangerous,” and they pose a real threat to Latinos.

“Florida is a dangerous, hostile environment for law-abiding Americans and immigrants,” Garcia claimed.

About NAACP Travel

The NAACP fights in court to ensure that Black Americans receive the civil rights they are owed. The biggest civil rights pioneers of the 20th century laid the groundwork for our legacy, which is maintained by activists in the 21st century. Our nationwide network of members works to establish the social and political power necessary to put an end to racial discrimination in places like courts, city halls, and Congress, as well as in classrooms and courtrooms. That work is founded on racial equity, civic participation, and institutions and policies that support all marginalised people. We are dedicated to a society free of racism, where Black people have equal opportunities in thriving neighbourhoods.

The Legal Defence Fund, also known as the NAACP-LDF, was established in 1940 as a division of the NAACP but now functions as a totally independent organisation.
