Picnic Movie Storyline:

The day before the Labour Day picnic, William Holden’s Hal Carter makes his way to the sleepy Kansas town of Kiowa. He looks for Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson), a former classmate who is now a prosperous local businessman. The lovely daughter of a nearby store owner, Madge Owens (Kim Novak), introduces herself to Hal. Although Madge is seeing Alan, she is drawn to Hal’s rugged charm right away. To the dismay of Alan and Madge’s mother, Flo (Betty Field), Hal and Madge become closer as the day goes on.

The movie’s climax occurs at the evening dance, when Hal and Madge dance passionately while the other characters look on in disgust. In the end, Hal makes the decision to leave town, leaving Madge to decide between the security and stability Alan can provide and the thrill and unpredictability of a future with Hal.
