At the start of the 2023 NFL Draft, the league gave tribute to three players University of Virginia football shooting who died in a tragic shooting. Before the commissioner announced the first picks, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, a former Pro Bowl offensive tackle for the New York Jets who played at Virginia before being chosen in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, talked about each player. Each player’s family was given a jersey from a different NFL team. Since Perry grew up in Miami, his family got him a Miami Dolphins shirt. Davis Jr.’s family got a jersey from the Baltimore Ravens, and Chandler’s family got a shirt from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Chandler and Davis played for the Cavaliers as wide receivers. Chandler played for the Wisconsin Badgers for two years before moving to the Virginia Cavaliers for his junior year. Last season, it was too bad that he never got to play for Virginia. Davis was a senior last year and played in eight games. He caught 16 passes for 371 yards and two scores in those eight games.
Perry was a linebacker for the Cavaliers for three years. In eight games, he made nine stops, got one sack, and had a pick-six. After the shooting, the NFL moved quickly to pay tribute to the players who had died. The Washington Commanders put stickers on their helmets with the numbers 1, 15, and 41 of each player.
On November 13, 2022, there was a terrible accident that killed these three young guys. Christopher Jones Jr., who used to play football for UVA, is said to have opened fire on a private bus that had just come back to campus from a trip to Washington, D.C. Davis, Perry, and Chandler were shot and killed in a parking basement on November 23, 2022, after a class trip to Washington, DC. Christopher Darnell Jones, who is accused of shooting, also worked out with the team for a short time in 2018.
Two other students at Virginia were also shot, and one of them was running back Mike Hollins.
Hollins got better from his injuries and took part in spring practice with the team this month. In Virginia’s spring game, he scored a touchdown.
